Mercedes-Benz has launched the G 580 Edition One at Rs 3 crore (ex-showroom, India), known as the Mercedes G 580 with EQ Technology.
The AMG G 63 facelift (priced at Rs 3.64 crore) is coming soon, but guess what? It’s already sold out until Q3 2025! Bookings opened up in July 2024. You can catch the G 580 at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo happening next week in Delhi.
Mercedes G 580: Design & Features
The EQG features a boxy silhouette reminiscent of the G-Class, specifically the G 450d, enhanced aerodynamics with a raised hood, new A-pillar design, roof spoiler, and rear air curtains, along with distinctive LED lights at the front. Mercedes has reduced the drag coefficient of the G 580 to 0.44 from the G 450d’s 0.48Cd, and as an EV, it features a charging cable holder instead of a spare wheel.

The interior retains the G model’s features, with a Mercedes MBUX multimedia system featuring dual 12.3-inch screens and physical controls for climate settings. Adaptive cruise control has also been included. Controls for off-road driving are located between the AC vents in the Offroad Cockpit, while the boot capacity is 555 litres, less than that of petrol and diesel G-Class models, with no front trunk available.

Mercedes G 580: Powertrain
This electric G-Class features a 116kWh battery like the EQS SUV, but with a unique pack design within the ladder frame chassis. You can charge it up from 10 to 80 percent in just 32 minutes with a 200kW fast charger, and it claims to have a WLTP range of 473km. The Mercedes’ G-Class packs four motors and a two-speed gearbox, cranking out 587hp and a hefty 1,164Nm of torque, zipping from 0 to 100kph in only 4.7 seconds and hitting a top speed of 180kph.

The G 580 retains independent front suspension while introducing a rear rigid axle and virtual mechanical differential locks for improved torque vectoring. It features a low-range transmission and off-road crawl function for speeds as low as 2kph, with a water wading capacity of 850mm, 100mm more than the standard G-Class.
The G 580 features the G-Turn function for 360-degree rotation and G-Steering for reducing the turning circle by pivoting on a wheel. A detailed review will be available on Autocar India.
