Toyota Land Cruiser FJ: The Legend Returns in a Compact, Rugged Avatar
Toyota has once again gone back to its roots — reviving the legendary off-road DNA with the global reveal of the all-new Land Cruiser FJ. It’s a compact, tough-as-nails SUV that perfectly blends nostalgia with modern-day capability. Unveiled in Japan ahead of its official showcase at the Japan Mobility Show 2025, the FJ is expected to hit the Japanese market by mid-2026, before rolling out to global markets soon after.
The Land Cruiser story started way back in 1951 with the Toyota BJ — the first vehicle ever to climb up to the sixth station of Mount Fuji. Since then, the name has stood for reliability, endurance, and go-anywhere confidence, with over 12 million Land Cruisers sold in 190 countries. Now, Toyota wants to reignite that same spirit of Freedom & Joy for a new generation of explorers with the FJ.
A Design That Celebrates the Past
One look at the Land Cruiser FJ, and you instantly see its connection to the classics. It’s boxy, muscular, and unapologetically rugged — with chamfered edges, flared fenders, and removable bumpers that scream functionality. The square-shaped cabin not only adds practicality and space but also allows easy customization, letting owners give their FJ a personal touch.

Rugged Inside, But Smart Where It Matters
Step inside, and Toyota keeps things simple yet smart. The horizontal dashboard design improves visibility when tackling tricky terrain, and all the controls are laid out exactly where you’d want them. It’s rugged, but not rough. You also get the latest Toyota Safety Sense package — a full suite of active safety tech that keeps you confident whether you’re on the highway or deep off-road.
Under the Hood: Reliable and Ready
Powering the FJ is a tried-and-tested 2.7-litre petrol engine, producing 163 PS and 246 Nm of torque. It comes mated to a 6-speed automatic gearbox and a part-time 4WD system, built on a refined version of Toyota’s IMV platform. Compared to the Land Cruiser 250, the FJ gets a shorter wheelbase, making it more agile and easier to handle off-road. Plus, with a 5.5-metre turning radius and improved body rigidity, it’s as capable as it looks.
Customization: Made for Adventure
Think retro round headlights and MOLLE panels for your gear, plus a bunch of accessories to amp up your adventure style. And guess what? Toyota also showed off the Land Hopper — an electric personal mobility concept that fits right in the FJ’s trunk. Just park the SUV, unfold the Hopper, and go explore — pretty awesome, huh?
Our Take: Bring It to India, Toyota!
Honestly, we at Motormatic would love to see the Land Cruiser FJ in India. Considering how well the Fortuner and Land Cruiser 300 have done here, there’s no doubt this compact off-roader will find its audience too. And if Toyota pairs it with a diesel option for our market, well — it might just give a few SUVs some sleepless nights.
